Specter of the Newlywed

This is one of the ideas I came up with for the 2016 Renderosity Halloween Creative Contest and I was somewhat inspired by the video game Murdered: Soul Suspect where a ghost investigates his own murder. I wanted a bride who died before she could wed visit herself in the morgue and mourn what was never to be. Since it’s for a spooky Halloween contest, I made the morgue as creepy as possible along with some tinted ethereal, misty lighting. Due to the fact that no nudity is allowed in the contest, I had to cover up the corpse as much as possible. My original idea had where you could see an incision on her chest and the heart sitting in that bowl on the trolley. Maybe that would have been too much? I like the way this turned out.

The spooky ethereal lighting was created with a combination of IDL (a global sphere and the “spotlight” seen in the main render also projected light through IDL) and traditional lighting mixed with atmospherics (a colored ambient, specular, and two spotlights heavy with atmosphere on the two figures). I intensified the creepy ethereal factor in postwork using a variety of Photoshop actions to alter the color, contrast, etc. I also added ghostly effects by painting with Rons Dry Ice brushes which seem perfect for ghostly artworks. The effect of the ghost bride is unique to this artwork. I rendered two versions of the scene (one with and one without the ghost) and several mask renders. This way I could create the ghost with layers and layer effects. Finally, I put some emphasis on the corpse’s engagement ring with a soft shine effect.
